Location: Multiple Locations in Austria, Including Vienna
Event:
The holiday season can unfortunately bring an increase in crime and security-related incidents. Embassy Vienna would like to remind U.S. citizens in Austria of the need to continue to remain vigilant and utilize appropriate personal security practices. Security measures in Austria remain heightened throughout the holiday season due to ongoing worldwide threats posed by transnational terrorist organizations and individuals inspired by extremist ideology throughout Europe. Violent extremists continue to focus on locations such as holiday markets, shopping malls, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, transportation hubs, and other soft targets frequented by tourists. In addition, crimes of opportunity (pick pocketing, purse snatching, thefts of unattended bikes) and property crimes (vehicle vandalism, vehicle tire punctures, vehicle break-ins and burglaries) can take place at any time.
Actions to take:
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you see something that seems odd or out of place, immediately notify the nearest law enforcement officer and move away from the area.
• Always carry your cellphone, programmed with local emergency numbers: Austrian Police (133), Ambulance (144), Fire (122), Europe-wide emergency (112).
• Exercise caution (in large crowds and congested areas).
• Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
• Use caution when walking or driving at night.
• Monitor local media for updates.
• Follow instructions of local authorities.
• Review your personal security plans.
• Have a plan for communicating with friends or family members in the event of an emergency.
