Security Alert: Syria, Update 1 (March 27, 2026)

Iran has attacked civilian locations across the Middle East, such as hotels, airports, embassies, and other civilian facilities and recent media reporting has indicated Iran threatened to do the same in Syria, specifically hotels that host foreign guests according to media reports. We are aware that some organizations have decided to relocate staff away from hotels in Damascus.

Shelter in Place

  • You should be prepared to shelter in place in a secure location within your residence or another safe building.
  • Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.

Embassy Operations

  • The U.S. Embassy in Damascus suspended its operations in 2012. The U.S. government cannot provide any routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Syria.
  • The Czech Republic serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests in Syria.
  • U.S. citizens in Syria who cannot reach the U.S. Interests Section of the Embassy of Czechia, should contact the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan for emergency assistance.

Actions to Take:

  • Enroll and encourage other U.S. citizens in Syria to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive alerts.
  • Maintain communications with family and friends to inform them of your status.
  • Make plans to depart Syria that do not rely on the U.S. government.
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Find a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.
  • In case of an attack, stay away from any debris, and monitor news outlets for official guidance.
  • Avoid protests and demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Pay close attention to communications from local officials.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have a contingency plan for emergencies and review the Traveler’s Checklist .
  • Keep your cell phone charged and pre-programmed with the following emergency numbers.
