Natural Disaster Alert – Mayon Volcano at Alert Level 3
Location: Vicinity of Mayon Volcano, Albay Province, Bicol Region
Event: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised the alert level for Mayon volcano to Alert Level 3 .
PHIVOLCS reports lava is building up at the summit of Mayon volcano. This increases the chances of lava flows and fast-moving, deadly clouds of hot gas, ash, and rocks (known as a Pyroclastic Density Current, or a “PDC”) moving down the slopes. A hazardous eruption could occur within days or weeks. PHIVOLCS recommends everyone within a radius of six kilometers (3.7 miles) evacuate immediately. This area is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). Staying in this area is extremely dangerous.
