Weather Alert: U.S. Embassy in Maputo (January 21, 2026)
Location: Gaza and Maputo Provinces
Event: The U.S. Embassy is monitoring flood conditions in Southern Mozambique. The Limpopo and Incomati Rivers continue to rise and threaten infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. The worst affected areas are along or near the Limpopo River below Massingir Dam, to include Macarretane, Chokwe, and Xai Xai. Continued flooding may lead to water and electrical disruptions in Gaza and Maputo Provinces.
Other active flooding areas include:
- The N1 Highway between Manhica and Manica along the Incoluana-3 de Fevereiro section. The N1 Highway will be closed in this area for the foreseeable future. Detours are not clear at this time.
- The N2 Highway between Belo Horizonte and Boane. Flooding on the highway has temporarily closed access to Eswatini border crossings at Namaacha and Goma.
- Road R804 in Marracuene along the Incomati River, including the bridge to Macaneta. Macaneta is temporarily cut off from Marracuene and the greater Maputo area.
Actions to Take:
- Do not attempt to cross flooding rivers and bridges.
- Prepare emergency supplies for sheltering at home without electricity or water for at least three days. See additional guidance here .
- Make contingency plans to leave areas affected by flooding and/or prolonged water and electrical power disruptions.
- Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible. Monitor local media for updates.
