Weather Alert – U.S. Embassy Nassau, The Bahamas (October 7, 2024)

Location: Northwest Bahamas

Event: Hurricane Milton is a category 5 Hurricane with 175-MPH winds in the Gulf of Mexico.  It is forecast to approach the west coast of the Florida peninsula by Wednesday.  According to the Bahamas Department of Meteorology (met.gov.bs), residents in the Northwest Bahamas should closely monitor the hurricane’s movement as it is expected to produce heavy rainfall across the area and storm surge in the northern Bahamas.

Actions to Take:

• Avoid travel to the areas forecast to be impacted by the hurricane until the storm has dissipated.
• Monitor the local news, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website (https://www.noaa.gov/ ), and the Bahamas  Department of Meteorology website (https://met.gov.bs/ ) for updates.
• Seek secure shelter.
• Visit the Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) website for long-range forecasts of hurricane, typhoon and cyclone worldwide (https://www.tropicalstormrisk.com/ ) for updated storm tracking information.
• Contact your airline directly for cancelled flight information or to re-book your travel.
