Security Alert: U.S. Embassy in Maputo on February 11, 2026

Security Alert: U.S. Embassy in Maputo (February 11, 2026)

Location: Avenida Marginal, City of Maputo

Event: The U.S. Embassy has observed spontaneous and large gatherings along the Avenida Marginal near Costa do Sol and Fish Market in Maputo.  While these gatherings initially consisted of partying beachgoers causing traffic delays, they have recently escalated to criminal activity, including breaking car windows and robbing motorists and pedestrians.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
  • Keep your vehicle doors locked, windows up, and remove valuables from plain sight, including cell phones.
  • Have a plan to quickly exit the area and prepare to take alternate routes.
  • Maintain a two-car sized gap in front of your vehicle in traffic so that alternate routes remain available.
  • Do not attempt to force your way through crowds.
  • Be prepared to shelter inside your car during extended periods of gridlock.
