Demonstration Alert – August 30, 2025

  Lilongwe: Chilimampunga Ground, Mtandire

Event:  Planned Mega Rally in Lilongwe on August 31, 2025:

• President Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) are scheduled to hold a mega rally at Chilimampunga Ground, Mtandire in Lilongwe on Sunday, August 31.
• While the campaign period to date has been largely peaceful, large political events in the capital have historically carried an elevated risk of confrontation, and the possibility of violence cannot be ruled out.
• The potential for violence or spontaneous clashes remains elevated.  Road congestion and disruptions are highly likely to occur around the affected areas.
• Demonstrations could escalate into violence and spread to other areas of Lilongwe.  We recommend avoiding crowds, since tear gas may be deployed to disperse demonstrations.

Actions to Take:

• Avoid the areas of the demonstration.
• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
• Monitor local media for updates.
• Keep a low profile.
• Review your personal security plans.
