Demonstration Alert: Lima Protests (January 8 and 9, 2026)

Event:

 

Demonstrators are planning multiple protests throughout Peru on January 8 and 9, 2026 on a variety of issues.  The protests are expected to be small and peaceful, however even small gatherings may lead to increased police presence, traffic disruptions, and restricted access in the surrounding areas.

The aforementioned demonstrations are reported to take place at the following dates/times:

Thursday, January 8

  • 6:00 p.m. at Plaza Bolognesi, Central Lima

Friday, January 9

  • 10:00 a.m. at the U.S. Embassy in Surco, Lima
  • 3:00 p.m. at PetroPeru in San Isidro, Lima
  • 6:00 p.m. at the Palace of Justice, Central Lima

We recommend that U.S. citizens avoid large gatherings and leave any area where crowds or protests develop.

 

 

Actions to take:

 

  • Avoid demonstration areas, large crowds, and roadblocks.
  • Exercise caution near protests or large gatherings.
  • Follow instructions from the Peruvian National Police, Armed Forces, and local authorities.
  • Monitor local news and embassy alerts for updates.
  • Adjust travel plans to avoid affected areas and allow extra time for delays.
