Security Alert: Amsterdam (The Netherlands), U.S. Mission reminds U.S. citizens to maintain good personal security practices and exercise heightened situational awareness

March 16, 2026

Location: The Netherlands

Event: Following recent targeted explosive incidents in the Netherlands and in other major European cities, the U.S. Mission to the Netherlands reminds U.S. citizens to maintain good personal security practices and exercise heightened situational awareness, consistent with the Department of State’s recent Worldwide Caution  alert.

As noted in the Travel Advisory for the Netherlands , terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in the Netherlands. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas.

The U.S. Mission to the Netherlands also reminds U.S. citizens of the possibility of demonstrations or protests in major cities, including near the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam.

Actions to Take:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Stay alert in locations frequented by large crowds.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Monitor local media for breaking news and adjust your plans accordingly.
  • Call 112 to reach the police if you face an emergency or threatening situation.
