Location: Bogota and other cities in Colombia
Event: President Petro has called for a nationwide demonstration “in all the public squares of the country” on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 4:00pm. The protest in Bogota will take place at the Plaza de Bolivar Other locations mentioned in news media include, but are not limited to:
- Medellín: Plaza Mayor Medellín Conventions and Exhibitions
- Cali: Caycedo Square
- Bucaramanga: Luis Carlos Galán Civic Plaza
- Cartagena: San Pedro Claver Square
- Santa Marta: Bolívar Square
Marches prior to the event are likely, and will cause serious traffic disruptions in and around protest locations.
The Embassy will not be providing routine consular services after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7. All previously scheduled appointments will be completed as planned.
U.S. citizens should avoid large protests as they have the potential to turn violent. U.S. Embassy Bogota will monitor protest activity and provide updates as necessary.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid crowds and protests.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Wear little to no jewelry and carry few valuables. Keep a low profile.
- Avoid using your cell phone in public.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
- Keep car doors locked, and windows rolled up.
- Leave early and allow extra time for travel.
- Monitor local news media for updates.
