Location: Cambodia, countrywide
Event: Khmer New Year celebrations will take place across Cambodia next week. In Phnom Penh the “Nokor Sangkran” event will be held from April 14 – 19, 2026 and will take place at several locations, including Wat Phnom, Vattanak Park, Wat Botum Vatey Park, Riverside Park, Independence Monument, Chaktomuk Walk Street, Bassac Lane, and nearby areas. U.S. citizens should expect large crowds and severe traffic disruptions.
Historically during Khmer New Year there is usually a higher-than-normal incidence of driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and an increase in traffic fatalities. There is also an observed increase in petty crime (i.e., pickpocketing and phone snatching) in the days and weeks surrounding the holiday.
Actions to Take:
- Remain vigilant and safeguard your personal belongings when outside and when using tuk-tuks or other forms of public or commercial transportation.
