Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Lilongwe, Avoid Demonstrations Near Old Town (March 2, 2026)

A large crowd of people has gathered near the Game and ShopRite shopping centers and Peace Corps offices near Old Town, Lilongwe, Malawi. There are reports of tear gas being used. Malawi Police Service is on the scene. Please avoid this area today.

Avoid the Old Town area of Lilongwe.
Monitor local media for updates.
Avoid crowds.
Keep a low profile.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Minimize unnecessary movements.
