Security Alert – Thingyan Holiday

Security Alert – Thingyan Holiday
Location: Burma, countrywide
Event:  During the Thingyan Holiday period of April 13-16, road closures for festival events in Rangoon will occur around City Hall, Kandawgyi Lake, and People’s Square and Park.  Similar road closures may occur in Mandalay and other major cities.  We advise U.S. citizens to avoid large public gatherings if possible.
Widespread shortages and rationing of gasoline and diesel fuel will likely continue throughout Thingyan across Burma, along with restrictions limiting the use of private vehicles to every other day.  Expect long lines at refueling stations, some lasting for hours, as well as potential cancelation of domestic flights, often with very short notice.
Actions to Take:
  • Expect an increased security presence and avoid large public gatherings.
  • Be aware of the potential dangers and increased potential for security incidents at large public gatherings or in the vicinity of military or security facilities.
  • Plan to spend multiple hours waiting to refuel your vehicle.
  • Confirm your flights before departing for the airport.
  • Beware of crime.  The incidences of pickpocketing, robbery, and scams have risen due to economic conditions.
  • Keep a low profile and do not display large sums of cash.
  • Maintain constant awareness of your surroundings.
  • Pay attention to changes to security in your areas as well as your ability to communicate.
  • Regularly monitor local news and social media news channels.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
