Security Alert – Improvement in Security Conditions and Resumption of Routine Consular Services – U.S. Embassy Cotonou, Benin (December 8, 2025)
Location: Cotonou – Near Presidential Compound and Government Buildings Throughout Cotonou
Event: The Beninese government has reasserted control and conditions in Cotonou are calm. The Cotonou Airport has reopened, but some international schools remain closed. There are reports of military patrols near government offices and roads near some government offices being blocked. Given the overall improvement in local security conditions, U.S. Embassy Cotonou has lifted its shelter-in-place guidance for all mission personnel and will resume full in-person operations on December 9. Private U.S. citizens no longer need to shelter in place, but should remain vigilant.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid the area, specifically areas near the presidential compound and other government buildings.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid crowds.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Keep a low profile.
- Notify friends and family of your safety.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
- Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Beninese visa.
