Security Alert: Brazzaville and Pointe Noire Communities (Republic of the Congo), Potential Unrest on National Route 1

Location: Brazzaville and Pointe Noire Communities

Event: The Embassy has received reports of recent clashes between Republic of the Congo government security forces and local militia and civilian population along National Route 1 near Mindouli in the Pool Department.  U.S. government personnel have been advised of the increase in potential traffic blockages and violence in this area, to stay vigilant of their surroundings, and to avoid any type of government security activity as much as possible.  U.S. government personnel must now receive advanced approval from U.S. security officials for overland travel in the direction of Point Noire from Brazzaville via National Route 1.

Actions to Take:

• Carry proper identification, including your U.S. passport with a valid Congolese visa
• Avoid areas of any law enforcement or security activity
• Monitor local media for updates
• Avoid crowds
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Keep a low profile
