Security Alert - U.S. Embassy Lilongwe (June 27, 2023)
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi
Event: Demonstration Against the Legalization of Same-Sex Relationships in Malawi.
The Catholic Church’s Archdiocese of Lilongwe has organized demonstrations against the legalization of same-sex relationships in Malawi that will take place on June 29, 2023, starting at 09:00 am in Lilongwe. All U.S. citizens are reminded to avoid demonstration routes, exercise caution, and avoid crowds of demonstrators, especially crowds of dispersing protestors.
Route: The demonstration will start at 9:00 a.m. at the Mtima Woyera Parish (near Lilongwe Girls Secondary School), then proceed onto Kamuzu Procession Road, to Mchesi on Lubani Rd, then to Mzimba Rd. The demonstration will then enter Kenyatta Drive and move directly to the Parliament Building, where the demonstrators plan to deliver a petition. The event should last until 12:00 p.m.
Actions to Take: The U.S. Embassy recommends that you:
· Exercise caution when moving around and avoid the demonstration route.
· If you see a barrier or individuals blocking your path, turn around and find an alternate route.
· If you are unable to depart, keep your windows up and your doors locked, seek shelter if needed.
· Avoid large crowds and always leave yourself room to maneuver.
