The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor the situation following last week’s incident between Turkish nationals and local Montenegrins. A basketball game is scheduled today at the Moraca Sports Arena in Podgorica between the Montenegrin team Buducnost and the Turkish team Besiktas. The “Varvari” (also known as Barbarians), the group involved in recent incidents targeting the Turkish community, have a history of violence at sports events and are expected to attend. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM.
Given recent events, the increased police presence, and the potential for protests or violence, the American Embassy advises against attending this game. The Embassy also urges all American Citizens to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and monitor local news for updates.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid the area near the Moraca Sports Arena during and after the scheduled game.
- Remain vigilant and maintain situational awareness.
- Avoid large gatherings, demonstrations, or areas where tensions may escalate.
- Monitor local news and Embassy communications for updates.
- Refrain from engaging in discussions on sensitive topics.
- Ensure your travel documents are up to date and easily accessible.
