Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Uganda (December 17, 2025)

Event: Uganda will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on January 15, 2026.
Demonstrations and large gatherings could occur before, during, or after elections. Over the past month, Ugandan security entities have used force to control crowds at political gatherings in Kampala and throughout the country. Past elections have also seen outbreaks of violence. U.S. citizens should avoid large gatherings, follow the advice of local authorities, and refrain from engaging in political events. Past elections have seen internet, mobile network, and social media disruptions.
Actions to Take:
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid crowds.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Establish a communications plan with your family or employer in case of Internet outage.
- ATMs, credit card machines and mobile money apps may not function in the event of an Internet outage. Ensure you have cash in advance.
- Prepare 5-7 days of food, water, and medicine in case you need to shelter in place. FEMA and Red Cross have guidance on preparing for such situations.
- Avoid wearing clothing in colors associated with Ugandan political parties, including red, yellow, purple, and blue.
- Write down the U.S. Embassy phone numbers below so they are accessible in case of emergency.
