November 28th, 2025 – Weather Alert – Cyclonic Storm ‘Ditwah’ – U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka

Event:
The Cyclonic Storm “Ditwah” is currently centered near latitude 8.1°N and longitude 81.2°E, approximately 50 km south of Trincomalee. The storm is expected to move north-northwestwards. Due to the influence of this system, heavy showers and strong winds are forecast to continue across Sri Lanka. Cloudy skies, intermittent showers, and thundershowers are expected over most parts of the island. Very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm is likely in Northern, North-central, Central, North-western, Sabaragamuwa, and Western provinces. Rainfall above 150 mm is likely in Trincomalee, Badulla, Galle, and Matara districts. Other areas may experience rainfall above 75 mm. Very strong winds of 60-70 km/h, with gusts up to 80-90 km/h, are expected across much of the island. The general public is advised to monitor future advisories from the Department of Meteorology and take precautions to minimize damage from heavy rain and strong winds.
