Security Alert: U.S. Embassy in Uganda (February 20, 2026)

There are current press reports of an increase in crime around Uganda, including Kampala. U.S. Embassy Uganda reminds U.S. citizens that crime, including violent crime, can happen throughout Uganda at any time of the day. Personal security should always be on your mind.

Below are some best practices to help keep you and your family safe:

  • Do not walk/run alone. Travel with a buddy and consider driving when possible.
  • Use extra caution when walking or driving at night and early morning.
  • Do not walk/run with any valuables. Keep phones and necessary valuables hidden from view.
  • Minimize the number of phones and valuable items carried with you to those necessary.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Head up, eyes out observing the activities around you—look alert and be a hard target.
  • Depart or change direction if you see suspicious persons or activity. Trust your instincts and beware of distractions used by criminals working as a team.
  • Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
  • Keep windows and doors locked.
  • Vary your routes and times.
  • Ensure you have an emergency contact plan for your work and family.
