U.S. Embassy Rangoon is aware that the Burmese military has detained some political leaders, including State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi. Internet is not available in certain areas throughout the country, including in some parts of Rangoon. There is potential for civil and political unrest in Burma, and we will continue to monitor the situation.

We advise all U.S. citizens in Burma to take necessary precautions, including:

- Avoiding unnecessary travel

- Reviewing your personal security plan

- Remaining aware of your surroundings

- Monitoring local news for updates

Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, which can become violent at any time without notice. Be vigilant and keep a low profile. If stopped, comply with authorities.
