Security Alert: Port-au-Prince (Haiti), Toussaint-Louverture Airport in Port-au-Prince Reopens but Haiti Remains Level 4 Location

Location:  Haiti
 
The U.S. State Department’s Travel Advisory for Haiti is currently at Level 4: Do Not Travel.
 
Toussaint-Louverture airport in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, has resumed operations, but the number of flights remains limited and subject to decisions made by commercial carriers.
 
Be aware that changes at the airport may still occur as not all air carriers have resumed flights to the airport. Travelers should confirm airline status and availability of flights through each air carrier’s official website or customer service agents.
 
 
Departure from Other Parts of Haiti
 
The airports in Cap-Haitien and Les Cayes are open for departing commercial flights, although destinations and flight availability may be limited.
 
U.S. citizens have been able to enter the Dominican Republic through a land border with a valid U.S. passport.  Dominican Republic immigration officials have final authority to decide who may enter the Dominican Republic.  U.S. citizens who cross into the Dominican Republic at an unofficial crossing or who do not obtain proof of legal admission from Dominican Republic immigration officials may face fines when attempting to depart from the Dominican Republic. The U.S. government cannot help U.S. citizens cross the land border or intervene in decisions by Dominican immigration officials.
 
The security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous.  Travel within Haiti is conducted at your own risk.  The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety traveling to airports, borders, or during any onward travel.
 
Violent crime, including kidnapping for ransom, occurs regularly along many roadways in Haiti and U.S. citizens should assess their own safety and security when deciding whether to travel by road.  You should consider your personal security situation before traveling anywhere in Haiti.  Only attempt to depart Haiti or travel within Haiti if you believe it is safe for you to do so.

Do not travel to Haiti.
If you are in Haiti:
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Monitor local media for updates and avoid areas where violence, demonstrations, or disruptions are reported to be happening.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be prepared to shelter in place for an extended time period.
  • Avoid being outside after dark.
  • Stay alert in areas frequented by foreign visitors.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents up-to-date and easily accessible.
  • Carry proper identification.
