Health Alert: Juba (South Sudan), Ebola Outbreak in Neighboring DRC
Location: South Sudan
Event: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reports an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the provinces of North Kivu and the southern part of Ituri.
The northern portion of Ituri province borders South Sudan’s Yei River state. No suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported in South Sudan. The Ministry of Health continues to maintain screening facilities at Juba International Airport and along the land border crossings between South Sudan and the DRC.
Ebola is one of the hemorrhagic fever illnesses. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, and handling or washing of infected corpses or through contact with objects that have been in contact with infected secretions.
Actions to Take:
- Visit the CDC Travelers’ Health Page, which has information on Ebola.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Report suspected cases to the Ministry of Health by calling 6666.
