Health Alert: Romania, State of Alert Begins May 15

Location: Romania

Event:

On May 4, President Klaus Iohannis announced that the nationwide state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic will end on May 14. The government will implement a state of alert beginning May 15. Iohannis announced that the government will move toward easing travel restrictions, but many of the restrictions on public gatherings and inter-city travel will remain in place. Iohannis noted that “the epidemic has not passed” and the situation required a gradual easing of restrictions over several weeks.

Beginning on May 15, the following changes will occur:

  • People will be allowed to move within city limits for reasonable purposes.
  • Travel declaration forms will no longer be required.
  • Salons, barber shops, dental offices, and museums will reopen, provided that they can take proper action to ensure social distancing measures.
  • Masks or face covers will still be MANDATORY in public spaces.

This information is still preliminary, and may change in the coming days. President Iohannis’ full statement can be read here.

Please continue to monitor all security alerts from the U.S. Embassy and obey all ordinances currently put in place by the Romanian government. The latest updates are available on the Romanian Ministry of Interior’s website here.

The U.S. Department of State maintains a Global Level 4 Health Advisory: Do Not Travel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Travel Notice for Romania as well as a Global Level 3 Travel Notice.
