Health Alert: Kathmandu (Nepal), Lockdown in Response to COVID-19

Location:  Nepal Countrywide

Event:  On April 26, the Government of Nepal announced a lock down of Kathmandu as a public health measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19.  All lock down restrictions will go into effect at 0600 on Thursday, April 29 and remain in place until May 05, 2021.  U.S. Embassy personnel has been directed to shelter in their residences and avoid all unnecessary trips.

Other government implemented restrictions could be specific to a town, city, district, or region and may be enforced by the police and/or military.  Such restrictions have the potential to result in the forced isolation of travelers and prevent the ability of individuals to return home.  The Embassy’s ability to assist in your return could be compromised for an extended period of time.

As with all COVID-19 matters, the situation in Nepal is dynamic.  While the Embassy strongly discourages travel for its personnel, personal travel remains an individual decision.  Please make an informed decision fully cognizant of the possibilities and probabilities of further movement restrictions imposed by the Government of Nepal.  You are reminded to exercise a heightened level of caution and to remain inside your residences for the time being.
