Location: Multiple Locations in Croatia, including Zagreb
Event:
The holiday season can bring an increase in crime and security-related incidents. U.S. Embassy Zagreb would like to remind U.S. citizens living in or visiting Croatia to remain vigilant and utilize appropriate personal security practices. Security measures in Croatia and around Europe remain heightened throughout the holiday season due to ongoing worldwide threats posed by transnational terrorist organizations and individuals inspired by extremist ideology. Violent extremists continue to focus on locations such as holiday markets, clubs, restaurants, areas of high pedestrian traffic, places of worship, transportation hubs, and other soft targets frequented by tourists. In addition, crimes of opportunity (pickpocketing, purse snatching, etc.) and property crimes can take place at any time but often increase during the holiday season.
Actions to take:
- Be aware of your surroundings and potential exit routes from crowded areas. If you see something that seems odd or out of place, immediately notify the nearest law enforcement officer and move away from the area.
- Exercise caution in large crowds and congested areas.
- Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
- Use caution when walking or driving at night.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Follow instructions of local authorities.
- Always carry your cell phone, programmed with local emergency numbers: Emergency Response (112)
- Review your personal security plans.
- Have a plan for communicating with friends or family members in the event of an emergency.
