Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Guatemala City, Guatemala – (December 15th, 2025)
Location: Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, Sololá Department
Event: The Guatemalan government has declared a “State of Prevention” for the next 15 days in Sololá Department in response to reported violence between the neighboring communities of Nahualá and Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán. Open sources report the exchange of high-caliber automatic gunfire, including the use of RPGs, during recent skirmishes December 13 and 14. Allegedly, five people have been killed, and 11 soldiers have been wounded since December 11, 2025.
Actions to Take:
- U.S. citizens should avoid this area and utilize alternate routes if traveling in and around the area, including to or from Quetzaltenango.
