Security Alert: U.S. Mission Nigeria, FCT Area Council Elections and Movement Restrictions (February 20, 2026)

Location: Abuja, Federal Capital Territory

Event: FCT Area Council Elections and Movement Restrictions

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja alerts U.S. citizens that the Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections will be held throughout the FCT on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The Government of Nigeria will deploy large contingents of military, police, and other security forces throughout the FCT and may enforce a near-total vehicle movement restriction from 8:00 PM on February 20 to 6:00 PM on election day, February 21.

During this period, only Nigerian government vehicles may be permitted to travel on roads in Abuja. All other vehicles may be stopped, and drivers and passengers could be detained by security forces.

Out of precaution, U.S. Government employees and their families are required to stay within their residences from 8:00 PM on February 20 to 6:00 PM on February 21, and the Embassy strongly recommends all U.S. citizens to remain in their residences during this period.  The Embassy recommends U.S. citizens advise their household staff and visitors to not attempt travel during this period, unless they are voting, as they risk detention by Nigerian security forces.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid all non-essential travel during the restriction period.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency.
  • If you must travel, ensure you carry proper identification.
