Security Alert: Malawi, Crime Increases During Holiday Season

Location: Countrywide

Event: Crime traditionally increases during the end of year holiday season. Holiday travel and out-of-town visitors may increase opportunities for crime and robberies.  Residential break-ins are a frequent concern.

Actions to Take:

• Be aware of your surroundings and be especially watchful at night. Avoid isolated areas.
• Maintain a low profile, try to walk in pairs or a group when possible.
• Do not resist robbery attempts and avoid carrying large sums of money or valuables.
• Avoid confrontations, street gatherings, demonstrations, crowds, and political rallies.
• Only give personal information to known and trusted persons.
• Do not leave valuables in a vehicle.
