Weather Alert – U.S. Mission New Zealand – Heavy Rain Warning in the Southern Region of the North Island

 

Location: Southern Region of the North Island

Event: Heavy Rain Warnings and Watches are in force for affected areas Monday, April 20 afternoon through late evening, Tuesday, April 21. Heavy rain and strong winds make this a potentially life-threatening event. Severe impacts such as power and communications outages, dangerous river conditions, flooding, slips, road closures, and isolated communities are possible.

The Met Service advises that a red heavy rain warning is in place in the following regions:

  • Wairarapa
  • Wellington excluding Porirua

The Met Service advises that an orange heavy rain warning is in place in the following regions:

  • Tararua District

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor public weather alerts for your area on www.metservice.com .
  • Monitor the Transport Authority for information on road closures and conditions www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/highway-conditions .
  • Prepare your property by securing items that can be picked up by strong winds.
  • Gather needed supplies, including food, water, medications, etc.
  • Do not enter floodwater and avoid traveling to affected areas.
  • Act quickly to self-evacuate if you see rising water.
  • Carry an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle.
  • Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain.
  • Be ready for power and communication outages.
