Rio Grande do Sul continues to experience major flooding, landslides, transportation interruptions, and other related safety concerns. Persons living in areas prone to flooding are urged to take preventive actions and be attentive to the recommendations of local authorities.
U.S. citizens should reconsider traveling to Porto Alegre and the surrounding metropolitan area until conditions improve.
Salgado Filho International Airport is projected to remain closed until at least September 2024. Florianópolis-Hercílio Luz International Airport is the next largest functional commercial airport in the region. Commercial bus service to Florianopolis is available. U.S. citizens already in Porto Alegre can receive up-to-date information about assistance from the Government of Rio Grande Do Sul at this Brazilian government online interactive resource that displays shelter locations, donation centers, and health services.
The U.S. Consulate in Porto Alegre has cancelled all routine consular appointments through June 8 and currently remains open for emergency consular services only. U.S. citizens in Brazil can make appointments for routine consular services at the Embassy or another U.S. Consulate or Consular Agency, all of which continue to operate as usual.
