Event:
Peru will hold general elections on Sunday, April 12, 2026. There may be an increase in political activity, campaign events, and public demonstrations before, during, and after the dates of the general elections and any subsequent runoff elections. Elections are a routine part of the democratic process; however, they can sometimes come with temporary disruptions such as increased police presence, traffic congestion, and/or transportation delays. For this reason, it is important to remain aware of your surroundings and take simple steps to reduce risk during this period.
We encourage U.S. citizens living in Peru to take a few basic preparedness steps at home. Ensure you have essential household supplies such as food, water, and any necessary medications for several days, and keep mobile devices charged in case communication updates are issued.
Avoid large crowds, political rallies, and demonstrations. If you are near a demonstration or encounter civil unrest, prioritize your personal safety by moving away from the area and seeking a secure location such as a nearby business or your residence. Avoid confrontations, remain calm, and depart the area when you feel it is safe to do so.
