This year, Nepal will celebrate Holi, the Festival of Colors, on Monday, March 2 in the Kathmandu Valley and hilly districts, and on Tuesday, March 3 in the Terai districts. Expect vibrant celebrations with large crowds gathering to throw water balloons and colored powders in a spirit of fun and renewal. The celebration begins early in the morning and continues until late evening.
U.S. citizens should be aware that participation in color-throwing is widespread, and bystanders are often expected to welcome colored powder or water thrown at them. As with any large public gathering, exercise normal safety precautions: stay alert to your surroundings, travel in groups when possible, and secure your belongings against pickpocketing and petty theft. Be vigilant about your personal space, as there have been reports of unwanted touching and, in rare cases, sexual assault. If you feel uncomfortable, move to a safe location and contact local authorities if needed.
