Subject: Security Alert - U. S. Embassy Conakry, Guinea, July 27, 2022
The U.S. Embassy Conakry is aware that demonstrations may occur on July 28 and August 4 in the greater Conakry area. We understand the authorities may deny permission for these demonstrations, but that demonstrators may still plan to proceed. There will likely be an increase in law enforcement presence throughout Conakry.
All U.S. citizens are reminded that demonstrations intended to be peaceful can sometimes turn violent. Avoid areas of demonstration and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests. As always, carry a government issued ID and fully charged cell phone, turn around if you see a demonstration, and cooperate with authorities.
- Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
- Monitor local media for breaking events and be prepared to adjust your plans.
- Keep travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
- Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
- Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
- Review the Crime and Safety Report for Guinea.
U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist.
