Weather Alert: Tropical Cyclone Gezani, Madagascar Update 1 on February 9, 2026

Event: At 3:00pm local time, Tropical Cyclone GEZANI was located 502km east of Toamasina (Tamatave), with sustained winds of 90km/h and gusts of 125km/h. The system is moving westward at 15km/h, and will make landfall between Brickaville and Fenoarivo Atsinanana tomorrow afternoon or evening. At time of impact, estimated wind gusts could reach 245km/h. In addition, the storm will generate heavy rainfall (100 to 150 mm/24h), which could cause widespread flooding, flash floods, and landslides along its path. A deterioration of sea conditions is expected starting this afternoon. Please carefully follow the instructions issued by the local authorities.

The following alerts have been issued:

 

Yellow Alert (Threat): AMBATOSOA, ANALANJIROFO, ATSINANANA, ALAOTRA MANGORO, ANALAMANGA, BETSIBOKA, Antalaha, Andapa, Mandritsara and Befandriana Avaratra;

 

Green Alert (Warning): BONGOLAVA, ITASY, VAKINANKARATRA, MELAKY and MENABE.

 

Actions to Take:

  • Monitor the local news for updates.
  • Ensure you have sufficient supplies of food, water, and fuel.
  • Be prepared to seek shelter.
  • Notify friends and family of your safety.
  • Make contingency plans to leave.
  • Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. Government assistance.
