The Embassy has received information that protests are being planned for tomorrow, September 30, 2017, in Bujumbura and throughout Burundi. In Bujumbura, participants will likely assemble and move towards Centre-Ville, with possible stops at U.N. facilities in town. The event is expected to cause traffic disruptions and/or road closures lasting until mid-day.
This event is expected to be peaceful; nonetheless, remember that even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid areas where the gatherings are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings—including local events—and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
