The U.S. Embassy in Skopje informs U.S. citizens that a soccer match between Manchester United and Real Madrid will take place on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 8:45 p.m. at the Telekom Arena. The event is expected to draw approximately 20,000 fans. The Macedonian authorities anticipate heightened security and police presence for the large crowds during this match.
We advise U.S. citizens to be prepared for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions. We urge citizens to follow any instructions given by local authorities, monitor media and local information sources, and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities. Avoid unruly gatherings and exercise caution. We remind U.S. citizens that even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
We recommend U.S. citizens review the Department of State’s European Travel Alert (https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/Europe.html) regarding the continued threat of terrorist attacks throughout Europe. Terrorists often seek to exploit soft targets, such as pedestrian malls, sports arenas, concert halls, and public gatherings. U.S. citizens should exercise additional vigilance in these and similar locations.
