Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Belgrade (Serbia), Soccer Matches on May 21

The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade informs U.S. citizens that on Sunday, May 21, at 6:30 pm, soccer club Partizan will play Mladost at Partizan Stadium in Belgrade.  At the same time, Red Star will play Radnicki at Red Star Stadium in Belgrade.  There is a potential for violence before, during, and after these matches.  Expect massive police activity and crowds throughout Belgrade, especially around the stadiums.  Embassy personnel are generally advised to avoid the vicinity of high-profile sporting events.

 

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations
