Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Abidjan (Cote d'Ivoire), Security Update

Africa > Cote d'Ivoire > Abidjan

The U.S. Embassy continues to monitor the security situation in Côte d’Ivoire.  Since the late evening of May 11, soldiers have been shooting in the air at times at various army camps around the country, including in Abidjan, Man, Duékoué, Guiglo, Odienne, Korhogo, Abengourou, and Bondoukou.  While there have been no attacks on civilians, some have been injured while protesting against the soldiers.  There have been no threats towards U.S. citizens.

The U.S. Mission is suspending all up-country travel until we can be sure the situation is being resolved without violence.  The U.S. Mission has also instructed staff to avoid unnecessary travel in Abidjan.  U.S. citizens should exercise caution and carefully review the information in the “Security Messages and Local Resources” section in the “U.S. Citizen Services” section of the U.S. Embassy Abidjan website for information.

Because this situation has the potential to escalate into armed confrontation, we urge U.S. citizens to remain alert and avoid areas where protests are taking place and where there is the risk of a violent confrontation, including roadblocks established by demonstrators or manned by military personnel.  We remind all travelers to stay alert and cautious while travelling anywhere within the country.  Please be aware that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
