Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Riga (Latvia), Demonstrations May 8 & 9 to Commemorate WWII Victory over Nazi Germany

The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens that large organized gatherings are scheduled to take place in Victory Park on Monday, May 8th, from approximately 17:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Tuesday, May 9th, from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.  Additionally, a small march from the junction of Slokas iela and Kalnciema iela to the Victory Memorial is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9th, from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Though the U.S. Embassy expects the gatherings will be non-violent in nature, local police will be on hand to monitor the situation. 

 

U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
