Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Rome (Italy), Upcoming Demonstrations/Marches for the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome on March 25

The Italian State Police informed the U.S. Embassy in Rome that on Saturday, March 25, 2017, there will be several demonstrations in Rome related to the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.  There will be 27 heads of state in Rome for this event.   Access to the green and blue areas on the attached map will be limited and likely cause traffic delays in many parts of the city.  Below is a list of the demonstrations.

  • From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., approximately 5,000 people will participate in a march in support of the European federalist movement -“Toward a Federal Europe”.  The march will begin at Piazza Bocca della Verita’ and end at the pedestrian area in front of the Constantine Arch through the following route: via dei Cerchi, piazza di Porta Capena, via di San Gregorio, Arco di Constantino.
  • From 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., approximately 8,000 people will participate in a march by a social movement named “Euro Stop” which supports the exit of Italy from the European Union.  The march will begin at Porta San Paolo and will end at Piazza Bocca della Verità with the following route: Piazzale Ostiense, via Marmorata, Piazza dell’Emporio, Lungotevere Aventino, Piazza Bocca della Verità.
  • From 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., approximately 5,000 people will participate in a march by the “National Movement for the Sovereignty” (Movimento Nazionale per la Sovranità) against the current political direction of the European Union.  The march will begin at Piazza dell’Esquilino and will end at largo Corrado Ricci.
  • From 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., approximately 500 people, supporting the Communist Party, will participate in a demonstration protesting the political direction of the European Union at Piazzale Tiburtino.

Italian police will have a large presence throughout the city and will monitor all of the listed events.  Expect traffic delays in the immediate near the demonstration sites and in other areas near the city center.  Please find the attached maps of the locations and routes of the scheduled demonstrations.

The U.S. Embassy in Rome recommends that U.S. citizens and their families avoid the areas near the demonstrations and exercise caution if walking or driving in the vicinity.
