The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens that protest demonstrations are expected to take place around the Embassy and surrounding areas between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM on December 8 to call attention to the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. Police anticipate protesters to drive around the Embassy and surrounding areas in approximately 30 vehicles making pronouncements through loudspeakers. Police will not allow these vehicles to approach the front of the Embassy, but they will likely disrupt traffic flow in the adjacent streets.
Protests in Japan are generally non-violent in nature, but at times can disrupt traffic. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Japan enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy or the nearest U.S. Consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
