Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Demonstrations November 19

East Asia & Pacific > Malaysia > Kuala Lumpur

The Malaysian media has reported that a large rally is likely to occur in Kuala Lumpur starting the morning of Saturday, November 19. The coalition of civil society groups known as Bersih has stated its intention to assemble supporters at the National Mosque and the Maybank Tower at Jalan Bangsar and walk toward Merdeka Square in central Kuala Lumpur. Another group known as the Red Shirts has announced plans to mount a counter-demonstration in the same area concurrent with the Bersih event. The situation remains uncertain, and large gatherings are possible in or near these locations. Traffic will be disrupted all day Saturday in many parts of the city.

While most demonstrations in Malaysia are peaceful, the U.S. Embassy advises you to exercise caution and to be aware of your surroundings, particularly around large crowds or gatherings. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence with little or no warning. You should avoid areas that may be targeted for demonstrations and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations or large gatherings. You should monitor local media to keep updated with the latest information about demonstrations and areas to avoid. Local law prohibits non-Malaysians from participating in public demonstrations.
