Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Hong Kong (China), Typhoon Warning

East Asia & Pacific > China; East Asia & Pacific > China > Hong Kong

The U.S. Consulate General advises all U.S. citizens that local authorities are forecasting a tropical cyclone will impact Hong Kong and Macau on Friday (October 21) and Saturday (October 22). Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly and may include strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding in low-lying areas. All U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor local news media and the Hong Kong Observatory’s website. You can also find more Typhoon Tips on the U.S. Consulate’s website.

If you require assistance, please contact the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong, located at 26 Garden Road, Central, Hong Kong. The Consulate is open 8:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 5:30 on normal working days. You can call the American Citizens Services Unit at 2841-2211 or e-mail ACSHK@state.gov. The U.S. Consulate also maintains a Twitter account @ACSHKMac. Please be advised that if a Black Rainstorm Warning OR Typhoon Signal 8 or above is announced by the Hong Kong Observatory, the Consulate General will be closed. Click here for more information on Consular Services during the Rainy and Typhoon Season.

If you are a U.S. citizen in need of urgent assistance after hours, the emergency number for the U.S. Consulate General is 2523-9011.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Hong Kong or Macau enroll in Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in order to receive the most up-to-date security information. Enrolling makes it easier for the Consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
