Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Gracias a Dios (Honduras), Threat Against U.S. Citizens

Western Hemisphere > Honduras

The U.S. Embassy has restricted U.S. Government personnel travel to Gracias a Dios, Honduras, due to credible threat information against U.S citizens.  U.S. citizens traveling to Gracias a Dios should consider postponing their travel.  U.S. Citizens who choose to travel, or reside in Gracias a Dios, should remain alert to local conditions and for signs of danger, be extra cautious, maintain a high level of vigilance, and take appropriate steps to enhance their personal security.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Honduras enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department's website at Department of State Website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, (including the Travel Warning for Honduras), Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  Read the Country Specific Information for Honduras at Country Specific Information.  For additional information, refer to "A Safe Trip Abroad" on the State Department's website.
