Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Rabat (Morocco), Demonstrations This Weekend

Near East > Morocco

The U.S. Mission in Morocco informs U.S. citizens in Morocco of several demonstrations or sit-ins planned this weekend, particularly October 28, to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Moroccan citizen Mohssin Fikri during an incident with local authorities in Al-Hoceima.  Reports indicate that multiple groups plan to participate in protest activity in the Al Hoceima region.  As a result, the U.S. Embassy has recommended its personnel avoid travel to the Al-Hoceima area during the weekend.

It is possible additional demonstrations may occur in cities throughout Morocco, including Rabat and Casablanca.

These protests are not directed at the U.S. government nor individual U.S. citizens.  However, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.   If you are driving and traffic becomes ensnarled, you should try to turn around or take another route.
