Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Demonstrations in Centro

Western Hemisphere > Brazil; Western Hemisphere > Brazil > Rio de Janeiro

The U.S. Consulate General Rio de Janeiro has been advised of protests currently ongoing today, October 3rd, 2017 at the Petrobras building on Avenida Presidente Vargas. These demonstrations are scheduled to move at various times throughout the day to the next demonstration area at  Candelária and consolidating in Cinelandia at 1800hrs. The demonstrations were  organized by SEPE-RJ (Sindicato dos Profissionais de Educação do Rio de Janeiro) and PSTU (Partido Socialista dos Trabalhadores Unificados). Splinter groups of these organizations have also indicated their intent to participate in the demonstrations.

Local authorities as well as social media indicate that large numbers of demonstrators have assembled, causing disruption to vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement in the affected areas. In light of previous demonstrations, the U.S. Consulate General is advising all personnel to avoid travel through these areas and plan on using alternate routes as necessary. While most protests have not directly targeted U.S. citizens or any other U.S. interests, the focus and intent of demonstrators can change at any time.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

The Consulate takes this opportunity to remind you to review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.  Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
