Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Montevideo (Uruguay), Soccer Celebration

Western Hemisphere > Uruguay > Montevideo

September 27, 2017 marks the 126th anniversary of the Club Atlético Peñarol soccer association.  Local authorities are advising residents of the Pocitos area that celebrations planned during the evening hours may turn violent. In a similar celebration last year, there were reported incidents of vandalism against local businesses.

The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to remain alert and informed via local news sources regarding areas where the celebrations may be occurring and to avoid the areas near the celebrations.  You should exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings.

Be aware that gatherings can occur without advance notice.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.  Follow the instructions of local authorities.
