Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Casablanca (Morocco), Demonstration in Casablanca on August 23

Near East > Morocco > Casablanca

The U.S. Mission in Morocco informs U.S. citizens in Morocco of a sit-in scheduled for Wednesday, August 23, 2017, starting at 6:00 p.m. at Place Marechal in Casablanca in support of a victim of sexual assault who was allegedly assaulted on Friday, August 18, 2017, on public transportation.

Multiple groups are reported to be encouraging members to participate in the demonstration.  Additional supporting demonstrations are possible and may occur throughout Morocco.

U.S. citizens should avoid the area, maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and monitor local news stations for updates.

These protests are not directed at the U.S. government or individual U.S. citizens.  However, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
