The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens that local authorities report multiple demonstrations will be held over the next few days regarding the anniversary of the 1996 events leading to the deaths of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou. The demonstrations most likely to cause disruption to area traffic are as follows:
- Friday, August 4, 2017: Approximately 40 motorcyclists from the Cypriot Motorcycle Federation plan to ride their motorcycles from Paphos through to Pyrgos and up to the Republic of Cyprus Checkpoint at Astromeritis.
- Saturday, August 5, 2017: Between 08:30 and 10:00 a.m., approximately 800-1,000 motorcyclists from across Cyprus plan to enter the UN monitored Buffer Zone by crossing the Republic of Cyprus Checkpoints at Ledra Palace and Agios Dometios in Nicosia. Activities on Saturday are expected to affect traffic in the downtown area of Nicosia and areas around the checkpoints.
- Sunday, August 6, 2017: Demonstrations are expected to take place the day of the Memorial Services in the UN monitored Buffer Zone near the town of Deryneia, south of the Famagusta area.
The U.S. Embassy has advised its employees to avoid areas near these demonstrations. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
